The Lebanese International University (LIU) is a private university in Lebanon, established in 2001 with English as its language of instruction. Founded by former Lebanese defense and education minister Abdul Rahim Mourad, LIU has expanded from a single campus in the Bekaa Valley to a network of nine campuses across Lebanon, alongside branches in Yemen and other countries. LIU was established in April 2001 as “The Bekaa University” under Presidential Decree No. 5294, with its original campus in Al-Khyara, West Bekaa. After graduating its first freshman class in June 2002, the university opened a campus in Beirut and adopted the name Lebanese International University. Additional campuses followed in Sidon, Tyre, Nabatieh, Tripoli, Halba, Mount Lebanon, and Rayak.
The university has also pursued international expansion. It announced a Yemeni campus in Sana’a in September 2006 and has since established presences in Yemen (Sana’a, Taiz, Aden, and Mukalla), Mauritania, and Senegal. LIU’s academic offerings are organised into five schools. The School of Arts and Sciences covers disciplines including biochemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, graphic design, journalism, and public relations.
