Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) occupies a distinctive place in American higher education: it is the first public four-year college founded in the United States in the 21st century, and the first four-year public institution created in Georgia in more than 100 years. GGC’s creation was a direct response to a demographic and educational gap. In 1994, Gwinnett County was the largest county east of the Mississippi River without a four-year college. The following year, the Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Resolution 33, signed by Governor Sonny Perdue, formally creating the college. Dr. Daniel J. Kaufman, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general, was named inaugural president in September 2005, and the institution received its official name one month later.

GGC welcomed its first cohort in August 2006 and held its first commencement in 2008 with 17 graduates. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges granted initial accreditation in 2009 “in record time,” enabling the college to expand programs and pursue research funding.
